Oct. 27 (UPI) — One person was killed and six others were injured in a shooting that erupted during home coming weekend at Pennsylvania’s Lincoln University, authorities said.
The deceased victim was identified during a Sunday afternoon press conference as J’wan Jeffers, 25, of Wilmington, Del.
Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe told reporters Jeffers died of a gunshot wound to the head.
The six others injured by gunfire, who ranged in age from 20 to 25, were all expected to live, he added.
The identities of the injured were not made public, but de Barrena-Sarobe said one was a student at the school and another an alumnus. The other four did not have a direct connection to the university.
The shooting occurred after 9:30 p.m. local time Saturday during packed homecoming festivities held following a football game outside the International Cultural Center on campus.
The event was packed, and when the shots rang out, chaos erupted, with people fleeing in all directions, said de Barrena-Sarobe during an earlier press conference.
On Sunday afternoon, he confirmed that some were injured fleeing the scene.
One person, identified as Zecqueous Morgan-Thompson, was arrested following the shooting. De Barrena-Sarobe said Sunday that he had been charged with carrying a concealed firearm without a license, though authorities were unable to confirm if the weapon allegedly in his possession was used in the shooting.
“We have further things to do before we can confirm or deny that,” he said.
Morgan-Thompson was being held at Chester County Prison on $25,000 cash bail.
De Barrena-Sarobe said that they believe the shooting involved multiple shooters and that it erupted during the event and was not a planned mass casualty shooting.
“So we’re treating this as a shooting that broke out in the middle of homecoming weekend,” he said.
Authorities are asking the public to submit videos or information about the shooting, as they seek to piece it together.
Classes were suspended at the university for Monday, the office of President Brenda Allen said in a statement.
“Gun violence happens far too often in our country, and we are heartbroken that Lincoln University and its students are among the latest victims of such senseless violence,” it said.
“Together, we remain Lincoln University Strong and Lincoln University Resilient.”
The shooting is the latest to occur on a university campus.
A week ago, three people were wounded in a shooting at Oklahoma State University.
In April, one person was killed and six others were injured in a shooting at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina.
According to The Gun Violence Archive, which keeps track of U.S. gun violence, there have been 354 mass shootings involving four or more victims so far this year.
