UPDATE: A second victim has died after the mass shooting at a Michigan church, police said.

GENESEE COUNTY, MI – A man drove through the front door of a church during Sunday service, exited his vehicle and opened fire.

The church shooting left one victim dead and nine others injured, police said during a Sunday afternoon press conference.

The gunman, identified only as a 40-year-old Burton man, was fatally shot after exchanging gunfire with Grand Blanc Township police.

An active shooter was reported at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4285 McCandlish Road, in Grand Blanc.

Grand Blanc Township police Chief William Renye provided additional details Sunday afternoon surrounding what he called a “completely unnecessary and avoidable” incident.

The man drove his vehicle through the church’s front door around 10:25 a.m. as hundreds of churchgoers attended Sunday service, Renye said.

The man exited his vehicle and began firing an assault rifle, Renye said. One person was killed, and nine others were hospitalized with various injuries.

At some point during the chaos, the church was deliberately set on fire by the man, police said. The fire has since been extinguished, Renye said.

Investigators will begin looking into the man’s residence and cell phone records to try and determine a motive.

Police plan to provide additional information at a 5 p.m. press conference on Sunday.
