A man was fatally shot and “several” other people were wounded when a gunman opened fire at a New Hampshire country club Saturday night, the state attorney general said.
The number of injured in the attack at Sky Meadow Country Club was not immediately clear. A person believed to be the shooter was taken into custody, the Nashua Police Department said.
Police in nearby Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, said in a statement the shooting was declared a “mass casualty incident.”
“From investigation, a single adult male entered the club and fired several gunshots,” New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella said in a statement late Saturday. “One adult male was shot and killed, and several other people were wounded.”
The attorney general said there is no threat to the public in the wake of the attack.
The Nashua department initially said two shooters were involved but later said that, after reviewing security video, only one person appeared to have opened fire.
“The scene is still an active investigation but there is no further danger to the public,” the department said.
Michael E. Strauss, a lawyer representing Sky Meadow, sent a statement from the club saying it was cooperating with law enforcement. “Because that investigation is ongoing, Sky Meadow Country Club cannot comment at this time,” the statement said.
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., described the shooting on X as a “horrific tragedy,” adding, “There is no place in our state for this type of senseless violence.”
Fellow Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., said on X, “My heart goes out to the families of those impacted.”
Nashua, a city of more than 91,000, is roughly 45 miles north-northwest of Boston. The private country club is about half a mile from the Massachusetts state line.
Tyngsborough police said the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council and Massachusetts State Police were assisting authorities in Nashua.
