The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing. The Essex County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Local outlet NJ.com reported that the area where the incident took place is mostly residential and has many single-family homes.

Residents of an apartment building on the nearby Leslie Street were not allowed back in after the shooting, the outlet reported.

Mayor Ras Baraka shared a statement on Instagram, calling the incident “a dark and devastating day in Newark.” (He was citing the shooting and another incident that day involving a 2-year-old who died after falling from a 20th-story window.)

“We will not rest until there is justice for the parents and family left behind in unspeakable pain and grief. Newark will work tirelessly with the prosecutor’s office, state-law enforcement and federal agencies to ensure justice is served,” he wrote.

“We urge the killer to turn himself in, as there is no safe place to hide,” Baraka continued.

“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this trauma. Our prayers are with them — and our actions will support them,” the mayor concluded.
