A 10-year-old child from Michigan is dead after getting struck by a car near a school bus stop in Michigan.
The Van Buren County Michigan Sheriff’s Office said on social media that deputies responded to a report of a “car versus pedestrian crash” on 22nd Street in Porter Township at around 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13.
When first responders and deputies arrived on the scene, they located the 10-year-old — who was not identified due to their age — and immediately started providing medical aid to the child. As first responders treated the child, police launched their investigation into what happened.
A driver of a white SUV — identified as a 38-year-old female — reported that she “struck the child, who had been crossing the roadway after checking a family mailbox,” and immediately called 911 following the collision.

Police also reported that a “Mattawan Consolidated Schools bus had been traveling northbound on 22nd Street preparing to stop for a student when the incident occurred.” It is unclear whether students were on the bus and witnessed the nearby crash.
“The child was treated at the scene by emergency personnel and then transported to Bronson Hospital for further medical care,” said the sheriff’s office.
In an update a few hours later, the sheriff’s office said the child “tragically passed away from his injuries.” They added, “at this time, no further information is available.”
A detailed investigation was being undertaken by the Van Buren County Accident Reconstruction Unit with the sheriff’s office. The incident “remains under investigation,” according to officials.
The Superintendent for Mattawan Schools Randy Fleenor shared a letter, obtained by local outlet WWMT-TV, with the school community informing them of the incident involving an elementary school student in their school district.
“We extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to one of our own Wildcat families during this unimaginable and heartbreaking time,” Fleenor wrote.

He added that the school district has assembled its “crisis team” to “determine next steps in providing ongoing support” to the school community and that “counseling and support services” would be available for students and staff “as we navigate the days ahead.”
“We ask you to keep this family, and all who are impacted, in your thoughts during this profoundly difficult time,” Fleenor said, concluding his letter.
