Recently, we asked the friends, siblings, parents, and loved ones of MAGA supporters to share the “last straw” moments that broke their relationship. Here’s what they said:

Note: Some responses have been edited for clarity.
1. “I lost my entire surviving family, which isn’t very many, over Trump. My last straw to cut them all out of our lives was when they blamed us for our son’s autism, because he’s vaccinated.”
“Then my mom stole not one but two inheritances left to me by my dad and grandparents, justified it by saying that since I’m an ‘anti-Trump liberal atheist,’ that I don’t deserve, and my children don’t deserve, to have anything whatsoever. It left us in the worst imaginable financial strain that we haven’t been able to crawl out of.
My family took her side because I’m vocally anti-Trump. Never mind that I’ve always been there for all of them for any little thing, dropped everything and drove across multiple states to help them move, through sickness, funerals, etc. I’m now a worthless lowlife. They’ve called me racial slurs, insulted my parenting, and insulted my special needs child. By the time it goes to court, the money will be gone, donated to Trump and MAGA churches.”
2. “This one hurt. Just before the 2019 Trump v. Biden election, my Godmother, who has been like a second mother to me, said that all the problems in the United States were because of Black Lives Matter.”
“I was absolutely horrified and stopped calling. I feel super guilty because she was old.”

3. “I tried to warn my sister about COVID risks due to her bad health. She said she would not limit where she went or worry about exposing others to COVID. She gave it to her husband, who later died.”
“My sister was also hospitalized with COVID for five days, and complained when there was a delay in treating her husband because there were no beds available in the hospital.”

4. “I’m half indigenous and Latin (I’m Brazilian, studying in the US). My ex-boyfriend is an American, white, and was a Trump supporter. Every time he opened his mouth, he said something that hurt my existence.”
“Yes, I still put up with it for a few months because I was in an abusive relationship, and it wasn’t easy to get out of that. But I did it, now I’m here on my own and happier.”
5. “My best friend of 20 years started sending me all the conspiracy theories that she heard. Kept doing this even after we agreed to never talk politics.”
“Finally, I told her, ‘You vote for whoever you want, and I will vote for whoever I want.’ Seems this offended her. She said we were done as friends.”

6. “Sadly, my mom’s side of the family and some on my dad’s side are in the cult of Trump. You really can’t reason with these people.”
“My sister literally deactivated her Facebook because of two of our indoctrinated relatives hounded her about what she said about Trump and Ukraine. Our younger cousins, one older cousin who is trans, and my mom, sister, and I are the only ones with a level head about Trump now. We initially bought his crap, but after January 6, we woke the hell up, thank God!”
7. “My sister was totally into everything Trump said or did. I loved her very much and told her on several occasions that I did not want to discuss politics with her, because we would never agree. It didn’t matter what I tried to bring up — the rest of the family, even recipes — she always brought up something Trump-related.”
“She loved to write letters, and they would always include opinion pieces on how wonderful Trump was. I eventually stopped calling her. I still sent her cards and letters telling her that I loved her, but I usually threw hers away unopened. When she died, I had not spoken to her for a year. I still miss my pre-Trump sister, but I don’t regret not speaking to her for that year. I had to, to save my sanity.”
8. “I cut my aunt and uncle for supporting Jan. 6. No big loss.”

9. “But my older sister voted for the toe fungus wearing a people suit. I let her explain why, and part of it is because ‘Biden killed babies in the womb.'”
“She also said it feels like people hear she voted for him and suddenly that’s all they see, like a veil over her. And it isn’t fair. I just can’t even. I listened to all of her reasons, and it just isn’t rational.”
10. “My family claims to be very Christian and caring. I asked them if they were OK with people like our grandparents being dragged off the streets and put in camps like Alligator Alcatraz in Florida.”
“They said they would be happy when they went to bed that night, and would wake up the next day, and everything would be great. Welcome to the disgusting fantasy world of Trumpism!”

11. “My family is deeply MAGA, but prior to going completely no contact, my father was in the front yard with two grandkids who were fighting.”
“He scolded them and said, ‘What are the neighbors going to think of you acting this way?’ And the little boy responded, ‘That we’re liberals.’ 🤣🤣🤣 The brainwashing starts VERY early.”
And finally:
12. “For numerous reasons, I cut out my aunt and her offspring for doing and saying things that aligned with MAGA long before Trump came along. For instance, my uncle pressed me as to why I studied a foreign language to the point he became angry.”
“My mom’s last straw was a discussion about Trump and his administration’s policies and tactics. Even though my aunt and her family claim not to have voted for Trump, my aunt defended his deplorable actions. When my mom said, ‘His administration will detain, arrest, and deport people that are undocumented, legal residents, DACA, naturalized citizens, and/or US citizens, so long as we are Black, brown, or look Latino, we all risk being deported, since to them we are the other.’ My aunt’s cheerful response was, ‘Well, XYZ’s daughters have light colored hair and have a fair complexion, as well as my daughters, so that won’t happen to my daughters and granddaughters.’ Disgusted by my aunt’s remarks and ‘values,’ my mom asked me to block her on her phone, to which I happily complied.”—anonymous “
