Chase, the 12-pound miniature goldendoodle, tapped into his inner herding dog and led his family out of trouble.
According to WABC7, a fire broke out at home in Long Beach, New York, in the early morning hours of Sunday, Nov. 9. Everyone in the house was sleeping except for Chase.
After the blaze began, the tiny dog let out his loudest barks, waking up his family.
“The residents were woken by the dog barking, and then looked out and saw the fire,” Rick DiGiacomo of the Long Beach Fire Department told the outlet.
Thanks to Chase’s quick reaction, everyone inside the burning house, including the 2-year-old dog, escaped the fire without any injuries, though one of the people in the home had to escape onto the roof to avoid the blaze.
Multiple fire departments responded to the house fire, including the City of Long Beach New York Fire Department, and the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department. According to the latter, the fire Chase spotted was brought under control in 40 minutes and affected the first, second, and basement floors of the house.
“The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office, the Nassau County Police Arson Bomb Squad (@nassaucountypd), and the Long Beach Police Department,” the agency added.
In the aftermath of the fire, Chase is being called a big hero for saving his family from danger.
DiGiacomo noted that he has seen numerous cases where people are saved from fires thanks to their pets waking them up in time. He also suggested that every household regularly test its smoke detectors to ensure they are working when needed.

Chase isn’t the only hero dog making headlines. Freyja, a German Shepherd, had a moment in the spotlight in late October after she found a missing 2-year-old who was lost in the woods in dangerously cold conditions.
