A 17-year-old boy died after accidentally falling from a river gorge lookout while with his brother in Washington, deputies said.

The incident happened Aug. 20 at Cape Horn Lookout, near milepost25 on State Route 14, the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

The two siblings were taking in the views of the Columbia River Gorge when one brother fell down an embankment, deputies said.

Deputies said once the teen fell, his brother couldn’t get in contact with him.

His brother contacted authorities, and they found the teen dead on the “steep cliffside,” deputies said.

His body was recovered, and his death was determined to be accidental, deputies said.

The Cape Horn Lookout overlooks the Columbia River Gorge, a “spectacular river canyon” that runs 80 miles long and is 4,000 feet deep, according to forest officials.

It divides Washington and Oregon.
