Oct. 25 (UPI) — A crane collapsed at a marina dock in Massachusetts near Boston, killing two subcontractors, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. Friday in an industrial area on the Mystic River in Everett, near Boston, WCVB-TV reported.
One person died at Massachusetts General Hospital and workers were attempting to recover the body of another man under the fallen crane, WBTS-TV reported.
Crews were working to dismantle obsolete equipment at the marine dock terminal when the crane fell. The crane was 4 to 5 stories tall.
Referred to as “Iron End,” it previously served as a spot where tankers would offload for Exxon.
Plans are to redevelop the property into a mixed-use community.
It is also near a proposed soccer stadium for the New England Revolution.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred this afternoon on Rover Street, where a crane collapse claimed the lives of two workers,” Everett Mayor Carlo DeMarie posted on Facebook.
The two victims worked for a private subcontractor.
The site is operated by Charter Contracting, a redevelopment company.
“We are devastated to learn that two individuals from a subcontractor have died following a horrific accident at one of our job sites,” CEO Robert Delhome said.
Massachusetts State Police, the Everett Police Department and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Everett Chief of Police Paul Strong posted on Facebook.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified about the collapse.
