Three officers are dead and two are in critical condition after shots were fired while they responded to an investigation in York County, Pa., on Wednesday, Sept. 17.

A representative for York County Office of Emergency Management told reporters that at 2:10 p.m., local time, York County 9-1-1 received reports of a “police incident in North Codorus Township.”

Following the call, “numerous police and EMS units responded to the scene,” the representative said.

Colonel Christopher L. Paris, the commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police, later said in a press conference that there are “many details” officials are not prepared to release, given the ongoing nature of the investigation.

“That having being said, we’d like to advise the community that there is no current active threat,” he said. “The situation today involved law enforcement officers who were shot. I can confirm that the shooter is dead.”

“I can confirm that there were five law enforcement officers who were shot today — three fatally [and] two that were transported here to WellSpan in York,” Paris added. “They are currently listed in critical but stable condition.”

Paris withheld confirming the departments to which the deceased and injured belong at the request of the district attorney.

While the incident is investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police Department, Paris said that the officers were at the scene “to follow up on an investigation that began yesterday.”

Paris did not elaborate on the investigation but said it was “domestic-related” and that police shot the shooter.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE, the York County Office of Emergency Management said, “York County Commissioners are monitoring the situation closely and praying for all those involved.”

“We do not have further details at this time. All official statements will be released by law enforcement agencies leading the incident command at the scene,” the statement said.

In a statement on X, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said he had been briefed on the situation and was heading to York County.

Lt. Gov. Austin Davis also released a statement on X: “Please send prayers to the officers and those involved in the shooting in York County. As we learn more, follow all guidance from police and stay away from the area.”

Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday said on X, “I am aware of the ongoing situation in York County. I urge all residents to follow the instructions of local law enforcement. I am en route to the area and am praying for all involved.
