33-Year-Old Woman Tries to Help 7-Year-Old Boy in ‘Difficulty’ in Creek Before Both Are Swept Away and Drown

A woman and a child have died after falling into Dandenong Creek in Melbourne, Australia.

On Monday, Nov. 10, the Victoria Police revealed in a press release that the pair drowned after falling in the water at around 3:45 p.m.

“A woman and child have drowned after falling into a waterway in Dandenong this afternoon,” they wrote in their release. “A witness reported two people had been swept away after falling into Dandenong Creek, near Allan Street, about 3.45 p.m.”

Officials added, “It’s believed the woman went to the aid of the child and also got into difficulty.”

Authorities performed CPR on the individuals after they were pulled out of the creek unconscious but both died at the scene.

PEOPLE has contacted Victoria Police for further comment but did not immediately receive a response.

“Despite the best efforts of emergency services, they were unable to be revived and declared deceased at the scene,” the police said.

They added, “The pair are yet to be identified at this stage and police will prepare a report for the coroner.”

In an email, Victoria Police confirmed the victims were a 33-year-old woman and a 7-year-old boy from Doveton.

The woman had been trying to help save the child, according to news.com.au, while 7News quoted a witness who called the accident “very sad.”

Nearby residents also said the area had faced two weeks of heavy rain, resulting in the creek flowing at a high speed.
