The Borno State Police Command has arrested five suspects with 7,871 pieces of ready-to-use therapeutic food meant for malnourished children in the state
A statement released on Saturday by the Spokesperson of the state police command, ASP Nahum Daso, said the suspects were arrested in separate operations.
The statement reads, “The Borno State Police Command, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, has recorded another success in its sustained fight against crimes and social vices.
“Through the Command’s RRS – ANTI SOCIAL VICES UNIT five suspects were arrested for unlawful possession of 7,871 pieces of ready-to-use therapeutic food (Tamuwa), which is meant for the treatment of malnourished children” it said.
Providing the brief of the arrest, Daso said two of the suspects were arrested on 12th April, 2025, at about 1630hrs when operatives of the RRS Anti-Social Vices Unit intercepted a Sharon Galaxy vehicle at Njimtilo, Maiduguri, conveying 3,314 pieces of Tamuwa.
“Two suspects were arrested in connection with the incident” he stated
He added that “Similarly, on 9th June, 2025, at about 2130hrs, another successful operation was carried out at Legacy Estate, Maiduguri. A Volkswagen Golf car intercepted loaded with 4,557 pieces of Tamuwa. Three suspects were apprehended”
Daso said, the five suspects have since been charged to court for prosecution, adding that the recovered RUTF have been handed over to the Borno State Government, through the state Commissioner of Health, Prof. Baba Mallam Gana for proper distribution
The PPRO reiterates the Command’s commitment to the protection of lives and property, as well as ensuring that humanitarian relief materials and other essential supplies reach the vulnerable populations for whom they are intended.
“We call on members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to the Police” he said.
On May 4, 2017, a Federal High Court in Maiduguri jailed two local government officials in Borno to one year in prison and N1m fine each for misappropriating 180 bags of rice meant for Internally Displaced Persons.
The convicts are Bulama Zangebe, a councillor; and Modu Bulama, a storekeeper, both with the Mafa Local Government Council of Borno State.
They were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a two-count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy and criminal misappropriation.
According to the charge sheet, the two connived with one Shettima Maina, a former chairman of the local government, to commit the criminal act.
