  • The Coast Guard said five members of a sailboat were rescued after their vessel took on water off Cape Hatteras on Nov. 7

  • A helicopter recovered the victims from a life raft

  • The maritime agency didn’t state what led to the boat sinking

Five people were rescued after their sailboat sank hundreds of miles off a North Carolina cape, authorities said.

The incident happened on Friday, Nov. 7, about 260 nautical miles offshore Cape Hatteras, the maritime law enforcement agency stated in a news release.

The victims were from Connecticut and Rhode Island and were headed to the Bahamas when the sailboat, “Magic Bus,” sank, CT Insider reported. The Coast Guard did not mention what caused the sailboat to sink.

Coast Guard officials were notified by the crew of the Magic Bus, who said their boat was taking on water and all five people aboard were abandoning ship into their life raft, officials said.

The agency said that the Cutter Angela McShan (WPC 1135) and an Air Station Elizabeth City HC-130 Hercules aircraft crew were dispatched to the scene along with an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew.

“The HC-130 Hercules aircraft crew located the life raft,” authorities said, “with all five people aboard, established communications, and confirmed everyone was stable and in good condition.”

The Coast Guard added that the five people from the boat were recovered by the MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from the life raft and were “in good health.”

The helicopter crew returned to the aircraft USS George H.W. Bush for refueling, and then took the survivors to Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, the maritime agency said.
