Shots were fired Wednesday morning at Fort Stewart in Georgia, injuring five soldiers and causing a lockdown to the military base before the believed shooter was apprehended.

The injured soldiers were taken to Winn Army Community Hospital after being treated on site, according to Fox News. A statement from the base did not elaborate on the nature of the soldiers’ injuries.

Fort Stewart is home to the 3rd Infantry Division and the shooting took place in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area, per The New York Times. There are around 8,000 people who live at Fort Stewart, located around 40 miles southwest of Savannah.

Law enforcement was dispatched for the shooting at 10:56 a.m. and the suspect was apprehended at 11:35 a.m. per Fox News.

According to The New York Times, officials have not released the identity of, or any other information about the suspect in custody. Officials said there is no active threat to the community.

The lockdown that was placed on the base at around 11 a.m. has been lifted.

The FBI in Atlanta posted on X saying that the Savannah office was coordinating with the Army Criminal Investigation Division. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also posted on X after the shooting, saying that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp posted on X expressing his sadness over the shooting at Fort Stewart.

“We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,” he wrote.
