A woman has died after being struck by a trash truck while crossing the street in Santa Ana, California.
On Wednesday, Nov. 19, 69-year-old Maria Rubalcava was involved in a fatal collision at around 7:56 a.m. in the 600 block of S. Shelton Street, authorities reported.
“The Santa Ana Police Department received multiple calls reporting a traffic collision in the residential area of Shelton and Bishop Streets,” they wrote in a press release. “Officers, along with the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), responded to the scene and discovered that a trash truck had collided with a pedestrian.”
They added, “The pedestrian, identified as 69-year-old Maria Rubalcava de Ruesga of Santa Ana, was pronounced deceased at the scene by OCFA.”
According to Fox 11 and ABC7, the woman was “decapitated” in the incident.
PEOPLE has contacted the Santa Ana Police Department for further comment, but did not immediately receive a response.

Authorities said the truck driver “remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.”
“Based on the preliminary investigation, the trash truck was traveling eastbound on Bishop St. when it made a right turn onto southbound Shelton St. at the roundabout,” police continued. “The truck subsequently struck Rubalcava as she was crossing the street.”
Neighbors described the intersection as “dangerous” to Fox 11, adding that they want the city to put stop signs at the location.

They also said that Rubalcava lived locally and was on her way to the grocery store at the time of the incident, adding that the garbage truck was towed following the accident.
The incident is being investigated by the Santa Ana Police Department’s Collision Investigation Unit (CIU).
