The 7-year-old girl who died after she was swept out to sea in California has been identified.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) announced on Monday, Nov. 17, that the girl has been identified as Anzi Hu of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Anzi died after she was “swept into the ocean by a large wave at Garapata State Beach” on Friday, Nov. 14, according to the sheriff’s office. Her body was recovered three days later on Sunday, Nov. 16.
MCSO Chief Deputy Eric Bixler said a “private diver” from Stockton, who runs the Angels Recovery Dive Team, located the girl’s body “floating behind a rock” about 100 feet offshore, according to NBC and ABC affiliate KSBW. (That diver, Juan Heredia, is a father and volunteer diver, has recovered the bodies of 15 missing people in less than two years.)
“This is one of these stories that really touches your heartstrings,” Bixler said. “Nobody wanted to quit and go. I’ve been in law enforcement a long time, and this is one of the stories that touched me and was hard to deal with.”
The girl’s father, 39-year-old Yuji Hu, jumped in the water in an attempt to save his daughter. He was also swept out to sea and later pulled from the water by an off-duty lifeguard, but was pronounced dead at a local hospital, the MCSO previously said.
Anzi’s mother also entered the water to try and rescue her daughter, but was able to exit the water on her own, according to the sheriff’s office. She was treated at a local hospital for “mild injuries” before being released.
Bixler has since met with Anzi and Yuji’s family, noting that it was a “pretty tough conversation,” according to KSBW. “They were very distraught, as you can imagine,” he explained.
The MCSO said in its latest news release that the family of the victims “continues to request privacy as they continue to grieve this tragic loss and has expressed their gratitude to all agencies and community members involved in the search and recovery efforts.”

The fatal incident occurred after the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a “beach hazards warning” in the area where the family was swept out to sea, according to SFGate. Forecasters urged beachgoers to watch out for unexpectedly large waves.
There have been five other “surf zone deaths” in California this year, according to data shared by the NWS. All of the individuals were males who ranged in age from 8 to the 70s.
