A mild Saturday in store for Connecticut. But heavy rain, gusty winds will finish out weekend.

A one-day warmup arrives just in time for the weekend, leading to a pleasant Saturday across Connecticut with temperatures near 60 degrees.

Even though a cold front passed through the state on Friday night, the air mass in place over the area is milder than normal. As sunshine emerges during the day Saturday, temperatures could spend a few hours in the 60s before dropping back down as the sun sets around 4:35 p.m.

Big changes arrive on Sunday as a large storm system races across the Great Lakes and into the Northeast, bringing a period of moderate to heavy rain and gusty winds.

Timing looks to be later in the day, so Sunday morning services should be free of any organized rainfall. Wind gusts will peak around 20-30 mph from Sunday’s storm, which is unlikely to cause any major tree damage or power outages.

The first major cold snap of the season will be diving southward across much of the country as we head into the beginning of the week, but it may be delayed by a day in Connecticut.

Milder air lingers on Monday, especially in eastern Connecticut, where temperatures could rise into the mid 50s for one more day before the cold moves in.

Some computer model projections are showing a weak secondary low pressure system forming in New England on Monday, which could cause a few showers to flare up during the afternoon.

If enough cold air is present (which is certainly possible with the incoming cold snap), some wet snow could mix in with rain showers. Snow accumulation is not likely, but any flakes flying will serve as a reminder that we’re fast approaching the winter season.

Saturday’s forecast by region

Shoreline (including Stamford, Bridgeport, New Haven, New London): Partly cloudy and mild. Highs: 58-63.

Inland (including Danbury, Waterbury, Greater Hartford, Windham): A lingering morning shower is possible, then skies will gradually clear out, becoming mostly sunny and milder by the afternoon. Highs: 58-64.

Litchfield Hills (including Torrington, Litchfield, Winchester): Morning clouds clearing out, leading to a mostly sunny day. Highs: 55-60.
