The acting Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Prof. Olowo Samuel, on Thursday said the institution had tightened security following the killing of a non-student on its campus.
Speaking to journalists at the university’s administrative building, Samuel said the incident prompted management to introduce stricter access control, including barring students and visitors without proper identification from driving into the school.
He explained that the university also engaged armed security personnel, as some unruly youths often entered the campus with vehicles and intimidated regular guards.
According to him, the killing occurred in a bush behind the school, allegedly over a dispute involving money.
He said the case was reported to the police, who swiftly arrested some suspects.
He said, “We had to engage the services of armed men after a resident, who is not a student, was killed in one of the bushes behind the school.
“The school gathered that his peers killed him over a disagreement over money, and we reported the matter to the police who took swift action and arrested some suspects in connection with the killing.
“After thorough deliberations, the management of the school decided to stop students and unauthorised visitors from bringing vehicles into the school to maintain peace and order
“The governing council of the school also approved the management’s decision and surely peace has finally returned to the school.”
Samuel added that the rare level of harmony under the current management was recognised by the Edo Foundation Inc., which named AAU winner of the Niger Delta Award for the Most Peaceful Educational Institution in Nigeria.
He said he was also honoured with the Niger Delta Peace Ambassador Award for his leadership and commitment to peace, excellence and growth.
