The Adamawa State Police Command has ordered a fresh investigation into the 2021 acid attack on three people, including one Miss Eve Kwala, who sustained serious injuries.
In a statement made available to Sunday PUNCH by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, the command said the renewed probe followed public outcry, emotional appeals from victims, and growing demands for justice.
The police said the case, which was reported four years ago, produced no arrest despite initial efforts.
The command noted that reopening the matter had become necessary in view of fresh public interest and the need for transparency.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Investigation to review the case file, reassess all evidence, obtain new information, and identify all persons linked to the attack.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed a comprehensive review of the case file, reassessment of all previously recorded statements, and a renewed effort to trace and investigate anyone directly or indirectly connected to the incident.
The goal is the prompt arrest and prosecution of all individuals found culpable,” the statement said.
The command appealed to members of the public with useful information to assist investigators, assuring that all tips would be treated confidentially. It restated its commitment to justice and the protection of lives.
The development comes after renewed agitation by residents, led by Mohammed Fawas, one of the victims and the person believed to have been the primary target, according to africantelescope.com.
Fawas urged the International Federation of Women Lawyers, human rights groups, civil society organisations, and Nigerians to support Kwala, whose condition he said had continued to deteriorate.
He recalled that the attack happened near Ribadu Square in Jimeta when he and four friends offered Eve a lift home after finding her stranded.
Fawas disclosed that not long after, unknown attackers hurled acid at the vehicle, allegedly targeting him in what he described as a politically motivated assault.
The corrosive liquid left all occupants of the vehicle with severe burns, with Eve suffering the most extensive injuries.
She has since struggled to access proper medical care due to financial challenges and delays in referral processes.
Fawas added that one suspect was arrested shortly after the incident but was later granted bail.
He alleged that “powerful individuals” frustrated efforts to ensure justice.
Kwala, an orphan from Hong Local Government Area, is reported to be in worsening condition and without adequate family support.
Fawas appealed to the Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, to intervene, insisting that Eve “must not die without justice.”
