A ferry company has issued an apology after accidentally playing an “adult film” in its passenger lounges.
DFDS said that the “unfortunate incident” occurred on Oct. 26 while one of their Transmanche ferries was heading from the French commune of Dieppe, to the town of Newhaven in England, the Danish international shipping and logistics company confirmed in an email to PEOPLE.
Passengers had been watching the Formula One grand prix in the onboard lounges during a delay on the crossing, but once it had finished, the crew were unaware that “an adult film” was the next item to be shown, DFDS said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

The company said, “During the delay, a group of passengers asked if they could watch the F1 Grand Prix on the TV in the onboard lounges. Unfortunately, the crew were not aware that once this programme finished, the next item to be broadcast was an adult film.”
“Once the crew were alerted to the content by a passenger the channel was swiftly changed. Moreover, the channel has now been removed from the list of available stations on the ship to ensure that this will not happen again,” DFDS added in the statement.
“We are very sorry for the understandable upset and anger that this caused for the families onboard who unfortunately viewed this content,” the message read.
DFDS also apologized for the delay, which had been “caused by a technical issue with the ship,” per the statement.
“Our crew worked hard to resolve the situation as quickly as possible, but we understand that the extended waiting time and disruption to onward travel plans caused frustration and discomfort. Passengers are being contacted regarding the impact of the delays and appropriate compensation is being offered,” the company said in the message regarding the hold-up.

The statement comes after one passenger recalled how kids were “screaming” after the incident in the lounge area, per local Brighton and Hove paper The Argus.
The unnamed passenger told the outlet, “I’d gone to main reception to tell them I was getting off and to transfer me from a car passenger to foot passenger, when suddenly kids ran out of the recliner lounge area screaming.”
“Some parents came out and they were asking the man who worked there to sort the tv out, they were saying ‘there’s hardcore porn on the tv,'” she added. “I couldn’t see it, but it was audible.”
The passenger continued, “There were parents explaining to their children that not all adults do that. It was a bit mad,” sharing, “I don’t know how it got on there. It was a whole mess with the ferry crossing. People were really disgruntled,” according to the paper.
