We know when the winners’ deadlines are to claim the $1.8 billion Powerball lottery prize, the second-largest in U.S. history.
But how much will they ultimately get and who will publicly claim the windfall? That’s still a mystery.
As of late last month, Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots have reached $1 billion 13 times in history. The Sept. 6, 2025, Powerball drawing resulted in the latest billion-dollar lottery winner.
As they say in the lottery business, “it could happen to you.”
The Powerball drawing on Aug. 30 marked the first time in 2025 a lottery crossed the billion-dollar mark. Compared to previous years, it’s an interesting phenomenon: 2023 saw four billion-dollar lottery jackpots, and there were three billion-dollar totals in 2024.
Before the Sept. 6 drawing, the last billion-dollar lottery jackpot occurred during the 2024 holiday season: After three months of Mega Millions rollovers − from Sept. 13, 2024, a Friday the 13th, to Dec. 24, 2024, or Christmas Eve − the grand prize grew from $20 million to a whopping $970 million. A Christmas Eve rollover led to the $1.22 billion Mega Millions drawing for Dec. 27, 2024. A woman from a small town in California collected the grand prize, according to California Lottery officials.

They cannot choose when it’s time to collect the jackpot: “Currently, the choice must be made at the time the ticket is purchased, and cannot be changed. This is a Texas Lottery policy established in response to IRS rulings that impact the way the jackpot is taxed,” texaslottery.com states.
As of Friday, Sept. 12, it was not known whether the Texas winner opted for the cash option or annual payments at the time of ticket purchase.

The ticketholders who bought their winning ticket from the Big’s 103 gas station and convenience store in Fredericksburg, Texas, and QuikTrip in St. Louis, Missouri, have two options to choose from for their shared $1.787 billion Powerball prize, according to the Texas Lottery and Missouri Lottery:

Powerball and Mega Millions lottery jackpot winners have 180 days (six months) from the date of the drawing (Sept. 6, 2025) to claim their prize. In this case, the winners have until March 5, 2025, to decide what to do with their share of the $1.787 billion Powerball lottery jackpot, the second-largest in U.S. history. The winners must claim their prizes in person at lottery headquarters − Texas Lottery headquarters in Austin, Texas, and Missouri Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City, Missouri.
Neither ticketholders have come forward almost a week after the $1.8 billion Powerball lottery drawing, but the process to vet a winner takes time, anywhere from weeks to more than a month.
The 1st or largest jackpot: Who won $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot?
Who won $2.04 billion Powerball? The largest lottery prize ever climbed to $2.04 billion in November. The jackpot was an estimated $1.9 billion days before the drawing, but lottery ticket sales helped it grow to more than $2 billion after updated calculations.
