Alabama lawmakers reveal priorities for upcoming legislative session

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WRBL) — Lawmakers are revealing what they want in the upcoming legislative session.

From education to regulating gambling, leaders have reportedly said that there is more work to be done in the state.

The 2026 legislative session is over five months away, however, some leaders already know what they want to get done.

Reportedly, there has been a question of whether legislators are giving people what they want, which has been the one consistent thing the Alabama citizens have asked for.

Alabama State Rep. Juandalynn Givan has said that question has to do with gambling in the state. She also said that the people of Alabama should be able to vote on bringing a lottery or comprehensive gambling bill to the state next year.

“That is the one piece that we have not passed and given back to the people to vote on,” said Givan. “And I just think it’s time.”

Rep. Susan DuBose has said that she wants to continue funding for school choice, a tax credit families can use to cover educational costs. According to DuBose, it’s critical for students in Alabama.

“Some children do fine in a large environment, some have special educational deficiencies, and special needs,” said DuBose. “And so if a parent can tailor-make an educational experience where their child can thrive, that’s what we want for every student in the state of Alabama.”

Rep. Curtis Travis reportedly wants to see a pay raise for educators in the state. On the heels of an investigation in Bibb County, he also wants to see increased penalties for sex crimes involving children.

“I’m not necessarily one for the death penalty you know on that, I think that’s strong,” said Travis. “But I do think there are issues that with that type of crime, need to be handled and dealt with.”

The 2026 legislative session will kick off on Tuesday, Jan. 13th.
