Sometimes it’s hard to reaaaaallly understand just how much money billionaires rake in. The numbers are so large that they become somewhat incomprehensible.
And to add salt to all our non-billionaire wounds, they’re only getting richer! Elon Musk, for example, could be on track to become the world’s first trillionaire after winning a shareholder vote this past month that would award him $1 trillion in Tesla stock over the next decade for hitting certain performance goals, amounting to about $100 billion per year.

To get a sense of just how truly bonkers that is, the Washington Post created an interactive tool that allows you to see how professions across the US stack up against Musk’s yearly pay.
Notably, the world’s richest man is set to earn more than all US elementary school teachers annually.
There are 4 million elementary school teachers in the US; he will take home $3 billion more per year than all of them combined, according to the Washington Post.
Let me repeat: Elon Musk, one single man, will earn more money in a single year than 4 million (4…MILLION) school teachers in our country.

Moreover, each year, according to the Washington Post’s calculator, he’ll make roughly the same as the combined paychecks of all 3.2 million US cashiers, $72 billion more than all US family medicine physicians, $68 billion more than all US mechanical engineers, and $47 billion more than all US police officers. Again, may I remind you, this is one man!
Unsurprisingly, this new factoid putting Musk’s wealth into perspective quickly went viral across the internet, and people had plenty more to say:
“This is disgusting,” one person wrote.
“Definitely seems like a good way to run a society,” another said jokingly.
“And this is why, children, billionaires and trillionaires are the sign of a failed society,” someone else wrote on Reddit.
Some pointed out the issues he could solve with his fortune: “He could literally pay them all and still be rich. Same with world hunger. But he won’t because he has the empathy and emotional intelligence of a damp sponge.”

And others noted that, despite knowing he may be against their best interests, some will still cheer: “A minimum wage worker with no health care in middle america will celebrate this.”
A million dollars is just 0.001% of Musk’s proposed yearly Tesla stock of $100 billion. To put that into perspective, for someone earning the average US salary of $63,795 per year, 0.001% is roughly $0.64. So, to him, a million dollars is essentially loose coins rattling around his dryer.
