Anambra warns of fake portal offering campaign funds

The Anambra State Government has warned residents against engaging with a fake online portal claiming to offer ₦25,000 “campaign funds” in exchange for personal details and purportedly linked to the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.

In a statement issued on Friday, the state Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, said the online platform, which has been circulating on social media, was fraudulent and not authorised by the state government.

Mefor urged the public to disregard the portal and remain vigilant against cybercriminals exploiting the governor’s name and reputation for fraudulent purposes.

He said, “The Anambra State Government wishes to inform the general public that neither the governor nor the government has authorised any campaign or initiative that requires citizens to visit external links or provide personal information in exchange for funds.

“The purported campaign claiming to offer ₦25,000 campaign funds from Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo is therefore fake and should be totally disregarded.

“We urge ndị Anambra and the general public to be vigilant and not engage with suspicious links or provide sensitive information, especially those trying to cash out of Governor Soludo’s great profile. Your cyber safety and security are our top priority.”

The commissioner cautioned residents to verify any information or initiative attributed to the state government through official communication channels, including the government’s website and verified social media accounts.

The scam portal, which promised residents ₦25,000 for participating in a supposed empowerment drive, had gone viral on social media earlier in the week, prompting concern among residents ahead of the November 8 governorship election in the state.

PUNCH Online reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission had declared full readiness for the November 8 governorship poll across Anambra’s 5,718 wards.

The National Commissioner supervising Anambra, Dr Kenneth Ikeagu, disclosed this during a media briefing in Awka, stating that INEC had conducted mock accreditation exercises and completed logistics and security preparations.
