Argentina’s Milei to join far-right rally in Madrid

Argentine President Javier Milei will attend a far-right rally in Madrid this weekend, the organisers announced on Monday, a year after he caused a diplomatic spat with inflammatory comments on a previous visit.

The Europa Viva 2025 event, organised by the European Parliament’s largest far-right group, will feature “international leaders” including Milei, Spanish far-right party Vox said in a statement, without specifying when he would arrive or who else would be there.

Milei sparked a diplomatic crisis with Spain last year after saying Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez had a “corrupt wife” during a speech at a far-right convention in Madrid.

Spain eventually recalled its ambassador to Buenos Aires and left the post vacant for five months over the spat.

In June, Milei called Sanchez a “crook” during a visit to an economic forum in the Spanish capital.

Vox said thousands were expected at this weekend’s rally by Patriots for Europe.

In February, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and France’s Marine Le Pen joined a similar event in Madrid held under the slogan “Make Europe Great Again”.

Patriots for Europe, led by Jordan Bardella of France’s National Rally, vies for far-right votes with the European Conservatives and Reformists group that includes Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s party.

A smaller third bloc, the Europe of Sovereign Nations, includes the AfD party that surged to second in this year’s German elections.
