An armed man has been arrested at the State Farm stadium in Arizona where officials are preparing for a massive memorial service for slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, according to MSNBC.
Reporter Jay Gray paraphrased from a Secret Service press release of the incident.
“Local law enforcement, along with the Secret Service, approached someone they said looked suspicious. And at that time, he told them that he was a member of law enforcement. He was armed. They continued to interview him, determined that he was not a member of law enforcement. He was taken into custody and remains in custody right now,” Gray said.
TMZ reported that the suspect, 42-year-old Joshua Runkles, was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on a felony charge of impersonating a law enforcement officer and a misdemeanor of carrying a weapon into a prohibited place.
The memorial service has received “Level 1 Special Event status” since President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance are expected to speak.
According to Fox News, “Officials estimate that more than 100,000 people may gather in and around the venue, including attendees inside the 63,000-seat stadium and overflow areas outside.”
The service is set to take place Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. local time in Arizona, or 2 p.m. ET.
Kirk, the CEO of Turning Point USA, was gunned down while speaking at an event on the campus of Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. He was 31 years old.
On Friday, the House of Representatives passed a GOP-backed resolution honoring Kirk and condemning political violence.
