Oct. 24 (UPI) — At least 20 people are dead after a bus caught fire following a collision with a motorcycle in southeastern India on Friday, according to reports.

The incident involving a Kaveri Travels bus carrying 41 people occurred in the Andhra Pradesh district of Kurnool, located about 328 miles east of Goa, Indian Express and The Times of India reported.

“The loss of lives in a tragic bus fire accident in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, is deeply unfortunate,” Indian President Droupadi Murmu said in a statement on X.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.”

Images of the scene published online by the District Information and Public Relations Office of Kurnool show the bus burned to nothing but its metal skeleton.

According to authorities, the bus was traveling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru early Friday when it and a motorcycle collided in Kurnool. The bike went under the bus and exploded, authorities said.

“Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a statement.

“My thoughts are with the affected people and their families during this difficult time.”
