Millions of AT&T customers could be eligible to receive thousands of dollars as part of a $177 million class action lawsuit against the company.
The settlement arises from a lawsuit declaring that AT&T failed to adequately protect customer data, resulting in two separate data breaches in 2024.
On March 30, 2024, AT&T announced a data breach in which customer information, including addresses, social security numbers and passcodes, was found on the dark web, according to the settlement website.
A few months later, on July 12, 2024, AT&T announced a second incident in which customers’ call and text records had been illegally downloaded.
AT&T acknowledges that data breaches occurred but denies any mishandling of data or wrongdoing, as stated in a news release from Kroll Settlement Administration.
“While we deny the allegations in these lawsuits that we were responsible for these criminal acts, we have agreed to this settlement to avoid the expense and uncertainty of protracted litigation,” the company said in a statement to USA TODAY.
Here is what to know about the settlement and whether you were affected.
Who is eligible to file a claim in AT&T data breach settlement?
There are two classes of eligible customers who can file a claim.
The first group of eligible claimants includes AT&T customers affected by the data breach that occurred on March 30, 2024. The second group consists of those impacted by the incident announced on July 12, 2024. Some customers may be eligible for both groups of claimants.
The lawsuit, along with a statement from AT&T in 2024, indicates that the breaches are believed to have impacted over seven million individuals who held AT&T accounts in 2024. Additionally, it is estimated that more than 65 million people with AT&T accounts were affected from 2019 to 2024.
Customers who are unsure if they are included in the settlement can call 833-890-4930 with questions.
How much money can claimants get?
Eligible claimants can receive thousands of dollars based on their settlement class.
Customers impacted by the initial data incident can claim up to $5,000 through a documented loss cash payment option, requiring them to provide proof of their losses. Members of the first settlement class may choose between Tier 1 or Tier 2 cash payments.
Individuals whose Social Security numbers were included in the March 30 data breach can file a claim for Tier 1 compensation. Customers whose data was compromised, but whose Social Security numbers were not affected, can file for Tier 2. Payments for Tier 1 are five times greater than those for Tier 2.
Customers impacted by the second data breach have the option of a documented cash payment of up to $2,500. Additionally, they can choose the Tier 3 cash payment option, which will provide a share of the settlement after administrative costs and claims have been settled.
Customers impacted by both data breaches could receive up to $7,500, according to the settlement website.
