CLEVELAND (WJW) — Thousands of monarch butterflies are expected to flutter and fly through Northeast Ohio as part of their annual southern migration tour this month.

According to Cleveland Metroparks, the best time to observe the mass of migrating monarchs is typically the first three weeks of September, though their migration is heavily affected by weather conditions.
A Monday Facebook post from Cleveland Metroparks said the butterflies will be “stopping in many places throughout the park district to roost in the cottonwood trees for shelter.”
A post Wednesday indicated the butterflies are on the move, and while “weather conditions have caused migration roosts to decrease this season,” there is still a chance to see them as they journey south.

Monarchs migrate in August and September, flying from their breeding grounds in the northeastern United States and Canada to overwintering sites in Mexico and California.
