Boy, 16, Dies After Fall at a Prestigious Private Catholic School in N.Y.C.: ‘An Unimaginable Tragedy’

A 16-year-old boy died after a fall at a prestigious New York City private school.

Police responded to an emergency call about a young male who required assistance outside a building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side at approximately 9:29 a.m. local time on Thursday, Nov. 13, a spokesperson for the New York Police Department (NYPD) said in a statement to PEOPLE.

Upon arrival, police “observed a 16-year-old male with injuries indicative of falling from an elevated position,” authorities said.

The boy was transported to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, per the NYPD.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing. No arrests have been made at this time, police said.

The name of the boy and more details surrounding the incident have not yet been publicly released.

The teenager was a student at Regis High School, a Catholic all-boys school. In a statement to PEOPLE, a representative from the educational institution called the incident an “unimaginable tragedy.”

“It is with heavy hearts that we write that one of our students tragically lost his life,” the statement began.

“We are deeply saddened by his loss, and we pray that the Lord welcomes him into eternal rest and comforts his family,” it continued.

The statement added, “We recognize their profound loss, and we are doing everything we can to support them during this unimaginable tragedy.”

The school additionally said that counselors and campus ministers will be available to “any student or parent” in need of support amid the tragedy.

Regis is a tuition-free, merit-based institution that gives special consideration to families in need of financial assistance, according to its website.
