Investing.com — Utah prosecutors formally charged Tyler Robinson, 22, with aggravated murder in the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and announced they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted.

Robinson is accused of firing a single rifle shot from a rooftop sniper’s nest that struck Kirk in the neck last Wednesday at Utah Valley University in Orem, approximately 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Utah County District Attorney Jeffrey Gray filed a total of seven counts against Robinson, including felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, obstruction of justice for disposing of evidence, and witness tampering for directing his roommate to delete text messages.

According to court documents, Robinson left a note for his roommate implicating himself in Kirk’s murder and also sent incriminating text messages to his roommate.

Gray stated at a press conference that his decision to pursue the death penalty was made “independently, based solely on the available evidence and circumstances and nature of the crime.”

The defendant will continue to be held without bail as the case proceeds.
