A 19-year-old college student at the University of California, Berkeley, has died after nearly drowning at an overcrowded frat party.
On Wednesday, Nov. 19, police announced that the student died following the Nov. 14 incident on Greek Row, according to the Los Angeles Times, CW affiliate KRON and The Berkeley Scanner.
“It is with immense sadness that we have learned from the Berkeley Police Department that a UC Berkeley student has passed away, after a drowning incident that occurred on the night of November 14, 2025, at a recognized fraternity located off-campus,” UC Berkeley said in a statement shared with PEOPLE. “We are saddened by this tragic news and wish to extend our condolences to this student’s family and friends.”
The Berkeley Police Department offered their “deepest condolences to the student’s family, friends, and the wider campus community” in a statement shared with The Berkeley Scanner. The department added, “The harm felt by this tragic loss is profound.”
The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau had no updates to share when contacted by PEOPLE. The Berkeley Police Department and the Berkeley Fire Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
The victim has not been identified at this time.
The tragic incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. local time at an off-campus Alpha Delta Phi fraternity pool, CBS affiliate KPIX and SFGate previously reported.
Police officials told the outlets that the 19-year-old student had CPR performed on him by the fire department before being rushed to the hospital. At the time, he was in “critical condition.”
No further information was shared about whether the student was intoxicated before the incident at the pool, but police said they don’t believe hazing was involved, the Los Angeles Times reported. They also have ruled out foul play, according to the paper, KRON and The Berkeley Scanner.
When officers arrived at 2422 Prospect St. that Friday night, there was a big party underway, with more than 300 people in attendance, according to The Berkeley Scanner.
“Officers observed conditions consistent with overcrowding and heavy alcohol consumption,” the police department told the outlet. Since then, officials issued a civil notice of violation to the fraternity regarding “public nuisances during loud and unruly gatherings.” The fire department cited the organization for violating an Indoor Entertainment Event permit, the Berkeley Scanner reported.
In addition, the on-site fraternity safety coordinator, who is 19 years old, may face charges on suspicion of providing alcohol to minors, the Los Angeles Times, KRON and The Berkeley Scanner reported.

As this remains an active investigation, we do not have additional details to provide.”
