Speaker Mike Johnson is ready to bring a continuing resolution (CR) to avert a shutdown to the House floor on Friday, before the chamber leaves for a recess that stretches beyond the Oct. 1 government funding deadline.
Democrats have vowed to vote against the funding bill, demanding restoration of Medicaid support and action to extend subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that are set to expire at the end of the year.
Johnson’s plan would jam Senate Democrats.
After the House votes, the Senate will vote on the House GOP’s CR and a Democrat-sponsored alternative. Both are expected to fail.
Also Friday, the House will vote on a resolution honoring the legacy of conservative pundit Charlie Kirk.
President Trump, just returned from his trip to the U.K., has nothing on his public schedule. He is also expected to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping, after announcing earlier this week that the U.S. may have a deal with China over TikTok and will sign executive orders later Friday.
An environment already charged after the death of Kirk became even more combustible this week, with cries of censorship as Trump and his administration lauded ABC’s suspension of comedian Jimmy Kimmel’s show. On Thursday, the president suggested that networks and late-night shows in particular should not be allowed to be overwhelmingly critical of him.
