SIMSBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — After five months of closure, the state police firing range in Simsbury has reopened, according to a Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) director.

State police firing range closed: What’s next for troopers?

The range closed after elevated levels of lead was found during some troopers physicals. An investigation was launched into the range, and testing was performed to check for elevated lead levels in the facility.

Several improvements have been made to the facility in the last five months, according to Rick Green, director of communications for DESPP. These improvements include new showers, classrooms and other modifications.

Masks for instructors will also now be used to keep away any gun powder residue and other potential health risks.

News 8 reported in April that DESPP and the Department of Administrative Services are planning on building a new range in the same location in spring of 2026. The project is expected to cost $14 million.

They said that the new renovations are not connected to the lead issue and that the facility was due for updates.
