A man has reportedly been found guilty of first-degree murder after shooting his neighbor multiple times in a disagreement about smoking.

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, Sidney Bararchie Clarke, 31, of Brea, Orange County, was convicted of first-degree murder after shooting his 21-year-old neighbor, Logan Kahmar, according to The Orange County Register, Mynewsla.com, and Patch.

On Aug. 30, 2023, Kahmar was found dead with 17 gunshot wounds after authorities were called to his apartment complex, the Raintree Apartments in Brea, the outlets note.

“On August 30, 2023, at approximately 7:29 pm, Brea Police Department Dispatch began receiving numerous calls of gunshots being fired inside an apartment complex located at 650 N Tamarack Ave, Brea,” a police release read at the time. “Brea officers arrived within two minutes and located a male who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Prosecutors also told the court that the victim’s infant daughter was found by herself in the apartment, per The Orange County Register.

Clarke, who lived above the victim in the apartment complex, told authorities he had been having problems with his neighbor, claiming Kahmar had been  “drinking, yelling racial epithets, and being a nuisance in the community, per Patch.

He also had issues with Kahmar’s smoking and the pair had a “verbal confrontation” just before the shooting.

The day after the incident, Clarke was found by authorities in his jeep, which was parked by a coffee shop in L.A, The Orange County Register reported, adding that he was carrying a gun in his backpack at the time.

“We would like to thank the Orange County District Attorney’s Office for their partnership throughout this investigation, and for their filing of appropriate charges,” the Brea Police Department wrote at the time of Clarke being charged. “We would also like to thank Los Angeles County Sheriff Department for their assistance with apprehending Clarke. Finally, we extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Kahmar’s family and loved ones for their sudden and unexpected loss.”
