Six people were injured in a school bus crash after Minco Public Schools’ softball team was leaving an away game. The school is closed today, as confirmed by school officials.

As of Tuesday morning, no fatalities have been reported, though of those injured, five were ejected from the school bus, according to Lt. Mark Southall at the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

While the scene is still under investigation, here’s what we know about Monday night’s accident.

What happened in Minco school bus crash? How many were injured?

Reports from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol state that the bus was carrying 17 individuals when the collision occurred just before 8 p.m. on Monday in Caddo County. It was a result of the bus hitting a deer, which then caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and roll over one complete time.

Lt. Southall confirmed Tuesday morning that there are no fatalities reported in the accident that occurred. However, they are reporting that five individuals were ejected from the school bus, and other reports state there are six individuals total who were injured.

Four of the ejected individuals are juveniles and are now in stable condition. One individual was an adult, and Southall confirmed he is in critical condition. All individuals were transferred to Oklahoma City area hospitals.

OHP further reports that the driver was Minco Softball Head Coach Cody Schmidt, 38. He is injured as a result of the incident. It is not known how severe his injuries are.

At this time, Southall did not know how the vehicle came to lose control.

According to a notice from OHP, the highway and County Road 2760 were closed at 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8. The school bus was traveling on County Road 2760 that night after playing Riverside Indian School in Andarko, roughly 34 miles southwest of Minco.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol plans to host local media at 3 p.m. to share more details on the case.

Minco School District closed on Tuesday

On Monday night, following the news of the bus overturning, Superintendent Kevin Sims issued a statement regarding the school and its students.

“This evening, our Minco Softball team was in a serious accident west of Minco. Multiple individuals on the bus were severely injured. We will be closing school tomorrow. We will also provide updates as we are permitted. Please keep these student-athletes, coaches, and their families in your prayers,” Sims said.
