The leadership of Osun Amotekun Corps has announced the arrest of an ex-convict, identified as Akinpelu, who allegedly specialised in stealing goats from communities in Oriade Local Government area of Osun State, located on the boundary with Ondo State.
The arrest, according to a statement released by the spokesperson of the organisation, Yusuf Idowu, obtained in Osogbo on Thursday, was part of successes recorded by the anti-crime agency recently in its bid to nip crime acts in the bud across the state.
Giving details of how the suspect was arrested, the Corps said Akinpelu had successfully stolen two goats and kept the animals in his SUV when his vehicle was intercepted in Ipetu-Ijesa by some volunteers.
The statement read, “A 56-year-old man, Ayo Akinpelu, was taken into custody for allegedly stealing two goats in Ipetu-Ijesa. The suspect, a native of Ondo town in Ondo State, was intercepted after concerned residents reported suspicious activity to the Oriade Command of the Corps.
“The suspect had concealed the stolen goats inside his Lexus SUV. He was stopped by vigilant members of the community who insisted on inspecting the vehicle, leading to the discovery of the animals. Unable to provide a credible explanation, the suspect was immediately handed over to the Amotekun operatives, who swiftly responded to the scene.
“During interrogation, Akinpelu confessed to the crime and further revealed that he has been involved in goat theft for over seven years. He admitted to using the stolen animals to prepare pepper soup in his beer parlour in Ondo town, where he serves unsuspecting customers.
“The suspect further explained that he uses salt to lure the goats and render them less aggressive during the theft. Akinpelu is an ex-convict who had previously been jailed for a similar offence but was later released on bail. He confirmed that he frequently travelled to Osun communities to steal goats for his illicit business.”
In a related development, the Corps also announced the arrest of three men for defiling minors in communities across the state.
The Corps said one Elijah Olawale, 26, a resident of Ijebu-Ijesha community, was arrested by its operatives upon the complaint by his wife that he had carnal knowledge of her 9-year-old daughter.
In a similar case, the Amotekun Corp said an indigene of Akwa-Ibom State, working as a farm-hand in Modakeke, Osun State, identified simply as ThankGod, who allegedly raped his employer’s 12-year-old daughter had been arrested.
“He confessed to rapping her twice, which led to his being handed over to the Operatives of Osun Amotekun to face the full wrath of the law by his Boss.
“In the same vein, Adeleke Sodiq, a 60-year-old man had carnal knowledge of a 6-year-old toddler in Ode-omu, Osun State. The old man who was caught raping the toddler pleaded and confessed that it was his first time of perpetrating the act,” the Corps added.
Assuring that the suspects would be taken to court upon completion of investigation into their various crimes, the State Commandant of the Corps, Mr. Isaac Omoyele said the agency would not relent in its effort to rid the state of criminal acts.
