The disgraced ex-president of the Spanish Football Federation had eggs thrown at him by his own uncle at an event promoting his new book.
In August 2023, Luis Rubiales came under fire after kissing a member of the women’s Spanish national team on the lips at the World Cup. The player, Jenni Hermoso, maintained that the kiss was not consensual. The rest of her team vowed not to play in international competition until Rubiales resigned. In response, Rubiales dismissed the outrage as a “witch hunt” being carried out by “false feminists.”
Rubiales did resign several weeks later, in September 2023.
On Thursday, Rubiales spoke at an event to promote his book “Matar a Rubiales.” The book details the fallout from the controversial World Cup incident. According to reporting from Telegraph, Rubiales maintained his innocence in the book and blamed “armchair feminists” and “wokeness” for his downfall.
In February 2025, he was found guilty of sexual assault.
During the event, a man suddenly began yelling from the crowd. Then, an egg was hurled toward Rubiales. The former president quickly stood up after dodging the first egg. A second egg immediately followed, hitting him right in the back. Rubiales then charged toward the man as he tried to run out of the room. The man was arrested outside.
As noted by The Telegraph, Spanish outlets later reported that the egg-thrower was Rubiales’ own uncle.
