A rollover crash in Kansas earlier this week claimed the life of a young mother and injured her two young sons, according to authorities.
In a news release shared with PEOPLE, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office said that they received a 911 report of a single-vehicle rollover crash near the intersection of NW 30th and NW Tawakoni Road in Benton, just after 1 a.m. local time on Monday, Nov. 17.
“All occupants of the Chevrolet Impala were reported to have been ejected,” the sheriff’s office said, later noting that both Harley R. Wright, 27, and her children were found outside the vehicle, “which appeared to have rolled several times.”
Wright, of Wichita, was pronounced dead at the scene while her two children, 5 and 6, were taken to a Wichita hospital with serious injuries.
The sheriff’s office said that Wright left a family gathering around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16, in order to take the kids to El Dorado.
When they never arrived, relatives contacted the El Dorado Police Department to perform a welfare check. However, her family members then located the scene of the crash.
“Harley was laying right here close to the car,” Wright’s sister Hayley recalled to NBC affiliate KWCH. “We think she got up and was trying to find her kids and you know, talk to them. It was a lot to see.”
A GoFundMe was created to pay for memorial expenses and to support Wright’s two children.
“While we mourn the loss of Harley, we are thankful that her two boys, who were also involved in the accident, are stable and recovering well,” the organizer wrote in a message. “They will need immense love and support in the days and months ahead, so please hold them close in your prayers.”
“Losing her so suddenly is something we never imagined, and the pain of her absence is something we are struggling to put into words,” the statement continued. “She was such an important part of our family. So full of love, laughter, and kindness. She had a way of making everyone feel seen and cared for. To lose her this soon, and in this way, is a heartbreak we’re still trying to comprehend.”
