Flight departing from Boston puts on the brakes after spitting out flames

A Swiss International Air Lines passenger jet departing for Zurich from Boston came to a halt during takeoff after it made a loud noise and a puff of smoke emerged from its engine, video shows.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement the carrier’s flight 55 was departing from Boston Logan International Airport but halted takeoff because it had “engine issues” at roughly 6:25 p.m. Tuesday.

Social media video verified by NBC News shows the Airbus A330-300 begin to accelerate before there is visible combustion in its No. 2 engine, which briefly spit out flames and emitted an explosive sound.

The video shows a puff of smoke emerging behind the jetliner.

After that, the plane slowed, then stopped, as runway-based first responders scrambled. The plane was not airborne, and all its landing gear was on the ground when the incident took place.

“We’re about halfway down the runway when all of a sudden, there’s kind of a boom noise and a big jolt, so the plane jolts forward,” passenger Molly Furrer told NBC Boston. “I could feel the plane braking and then started to skid down the runway until it came to a complete stop.”

No injuries were reported. The plane was eventually moved off the runway.

“The aircraft returned to Logan for a report of a loud noise,” the Massachusetts Port Authority, which runs Boston Logan, said in a statement.

FAA records show the situation triggered a brief ground stop at Boston Logan for a “disabled aircraft” on runway 22R.

Swiss International Air Lines did not immediately respond to a request for more information.

Flight tracking website FlightAware on Tuesday night showed the flight departing from Boston Logan anew just before 11 p.m. and headed for Zurich.

It wasn’t clear if another plane was being used or if the one involved in the Boston incidents was deemed safe and airworthy.
