The Federal Road Safety Corps, on Monday, flagged off its 2025 Ember Months Campaign in Kebbi with the theme, “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving.”

The Sector Commander of FRSC in the state, Mrs Rukayya Zakaria, stated this at a press conference to mark the commencement of the annual campaign in Birnin Kebbi.

Zakaria said the ember months campaign was a yearly tradition through which the corps intensified road safety advocacy to reduce crashes, injuries, and deaths during the high-travel season.

“The ember months are often marked by increased travel and higher traffic volume, leading to a rise in crashes and fatalities.

“This year’s theme emphasises that human factors remain the major cause of road crashes, and drivers must take full responsibility for their safety,” she said.

Zakaria identified driver fatigue, overloading, conveyance of passengers in haulage vehicles, and carrying fuel in plastic containers as major causes of accidents.

She listed common traffic infractions such as speeding, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failure to use seat belts, and the use of mobile phones while driving as major contributors to road crashes.

Zakaria said the 2025 campaign was designed to address such violations through intensified enforcement and public enlightenment.

“The corps will deploy personnel and special marshals across major highways and crash-prone corridors.

“We will also conduct free vehicle checks, organise town hall meetings, and carry out rallies in motor parks nationwide,” she said.

She added that FRSC had strengthened its partnerships with driving schools, fleet operators, NGOs, and civil society groups to promote safe driving practices.

According to her, mobile courts and stop-over operations have been instrumental in reducing offences such as overloading and speeding.

The sector commander commended the state government for its continued support of FRSC.

She urged motorists and other road users to comply with traffic rules and take responsibility for their safety during and beyond the ember months.
