Nov. 3 (UPI) — Indonesian officials stopped construction of a large glass elevator project at world-renowned Kelingking Beach in Bali.
The 597-foot elevator in Nusa Penida built by Chinese developer China Kaishi Group was halted over concerns over building violations.
The cliff-altering project construction has taken place over the last year. But Kelingking Beach remains open to the public.
Concerns have risen over project permits and licensing by the office on spatial affairs, assess and permits.
“The Bali Municipal police will ensure that no construction activities continue here,” according to Made Supartha, the spatial affairs chief.
Supartha said the project failed to gather all its required permits and other paperwork to continue, including for safety and disaster mitigation.
A provincial government official has called for an investigation.
But Indonesia’s deputy tourism minister said the project’s supervision “has been in place since the project’s planning phase in 2023, reflecting our commitment to sustainability, safety and cleanliness.”
Meanwhile, it’s unclear how long the suspension will last.
