Hawaii is under a state of emergency as Hurricane Kiko approaches, bringing the threat of high winds, flooding rains, and dangerous surf to the islands.
Once classified as a major hurricane, the latest update from the National Hurricane Center has reclassified Kiko as a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 110 mph. Even with this downgrade, the tropical system still may pack a punch.
Current forecasts show Kiko tracking just north of the Hawaiian Islands in the coming days. While the island may not be taking a direct hit, it will still be under the gun of heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and dangerous surf of 9-12 foot waves.
Overall, Kiko will be on a weakening trend as it progresses into less favorable conditions for hurricane development.
