New toll prices will take effect on Delaware’s highways starting Aug. 15.

The effects will be felt by beachgoers and travelers passing through Newark and Middletown. The toll hikes are just a part of rising costs from the Delaware Department of Transportation.

The tolls will increase as follows:

  • I-95 toll plaza near Newark: For those paying in cash or with E-Z Pass for two-axle vehicles, the toll will increase from $4 to $5.

  • Route 301 mainline: E-Z Pass customers with a standard two-axle car will pay $5, a $1 increase, and customers who pay by plate will pay $7, an increase of $1.60.

  • Route 1 tolls at Biddles Corner and Dover will increase to $1.50 for Delaware E-Z Pass customers and $2.50 for cash and non-Delaware E-Z Pass customers on weekdays. On weekends, rates for Delaware E-Z Pass customers jump to $4 and $6 for cash and non-Delaware E-Z Pass customers.

Division of Motor Vehicles fees will increase on Oct. 1. There will be a 1% increase in document fees for vehicle transactions and a new “annual alternative fuel vehicle registration fee,” which is applicable to 48,000 vehicles in Delaware, DelDOT said. That fee will vary from $15 to $900, depending on the size, alternative fuel and plug-in style of the vehicle.

A name change on a driver’s license will go from $1.15 to $10, and a specialty plate request will be $200, among other charges that DelDOT will begin implementing later this year.

The state also announced that drivers who go through an E-Z Pass toll without an E-Z Pass transponder will have 30 days to pay that off before it becomes a violation. Free transponders are available through DelDOT until Aug. 31.
