Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) sparked a wave of condemnation over the weekend with an attack on GOP mega-donor Miriam Adelson, who is backing his primary challenger.
Massie has run afoul of both President Donald Trump and many pro-Israel members of the GOP with his staunch opposition to the U.S. bombing Iran and supporting Israel in its war against Hamas.
On Sunday, Massie posted a photo of Adelson and wrote, “Israeli citizen Miriam Adelson bought the Dallas Mavericks for $3.5 billion; now she’s buying politicians. She’s spending millions in Kentucky to buy Ed Gallrein, my primary opponent, a Congressional seat in Kentucky. Why? Because I won’t vote to send your tax dollars overseas.”
Miriam Adelson is a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen and the widow of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. The duo had long been GOP power players and donated heavily to Trump’s past runs – a trend Miriam kept alive by donating $100 million to help Trump’s run for president in 2024.
A social media user replied to Massie, writing, “She’s an American citizen. Stop lying.” Massie replied, “She’s an Israeli citizen first. Even Trump says she probably loves Israel more than America.”
Many on the right were quick to pounce on Massie for questioning Miriam Adelson’s patriotism and accused him of engaging in anti-Semitic tropes – pointing to the photo he chose of her.
Talk radio host Mark Davis noted, “Massie is free to lament dollars sent to an opponent. He is certainly free to criticize #MiriamAdelson, which I will do as long as she attempts to force-feed casinos into my state. But she has been a US Citizen since 1991. He knows full well the antisemitic trope he is deploying.”
Political journalist Lahav Harkov replied, “Adelson doesn’t *always* wear Stars of David, but Massie is trying to make a point here, and the point is: JEW!!!”
