Meteorological winter begins on Dec. 1 while astronomical winter begins on Dec. 21.

The forecaster’s extended forecast predicts Wisconsin is in for a “very cold, snowy winter.”
Editor Sandi Duncan told USA TODAY most of the U.S. is in store for “a cold or very cold” season. “It’s going to cool down, it’s going to snow, then it might warm up a little, then it’s going to repeat itself again,” Duncan said.
What is the NOAA predicting for Wisconsin’s winter 2025-2026 weather forecast?
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is predicting an equal likelihood of above, below or near average temperatures in Wisconsin during December, January and February.
The seasonal temperature outlook is also predicting an equal likelihood of above, below or near average amount of precipitation through the winter months.

What is Old Farmer’s Almanac predicting for Wisconsin’s winter 2025-2026 weather forecast?
The Old Farmer’s Almanac indicated Wisconsin could be in for a mild and dry winter for its 2025-2026 forecast. But, in its fall weather outlook, the Almanac said parts of the Badger State could be in for some snow as early as September.
The forecaster also notes that its mild predictions “are relative.” “It’s still winter—so plan (and dress!) accordingly,” the forecast said. “And if you’re in a snow-prone area, don’t retire that shovel just yet.”
