Fall temperatures are starting to creep in as the calendar nears September, which means winter is just around the corner in Northeast Ohio. Will heavy snow blanket the streets in Summit County this December or will shoveling your driveway be a rarity?

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, which issues seasonal weather predictions, warmer-than-normal conditions should be expected in several regions across the country, including Ohio.

Here are some Ohio climate predictions from the Old Farmer’s Almanac, as well as the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center.

When does winter start in 2025?

The first day of winter this year will be Sunday, Dec. 21. It will last until Friday, March 20.

What are the Old Farmer’s Almanac winter weather predictions?

A milder winter is expected this year in Ohio, with below-average precipitation.

Temperatures are predicted to be above normal, with the coldest period to last from mid-December until early February.

Snowfall should be near to below normal, the Old Farmer’s Almanac predicted.

What does the National Weather Service forecast for fall in Summit County?

The NWS’s Climate Prediction Center forecasts equal chances for temperatures being above or below normal for the three-month period of December until February in Summit County.

There is a high chance of precipitation levels being above normal for the same three-month period.

How does the Old Farmer’s Almanac make its predictions?

The Old Farmer’s Almanac uses three disciplines to make its weather predictions: solar science, climatology and meteorology.

“We predict weather trends and events by comparing solar patterns and historical weather conditions with current solar activity,” its website states.

How accurate is the Old Farmer’s Almanac?

Weather predictions from the Old Farmer’s Almanac are accurate about 80% of the time, according to its website.

For last year’s winter predictions, the Old Farmer’s Almanac had an accuracy rate of 88.9% for temperature predictions across the country and 83.3% for precipitation predictions.
