The View co-host Sunny Hostin questioned Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) over why he would vote to end the government shutdown and said that, in her opinion, he was “wrong” to do so because Republicans will likely play hardball on the Obamacare subsidies the Democrats have called for.
Fetterman, during his appearance on the ABC program on Tuesday, disregarded the complaint — as well as those from other liberals like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), after Hostin noted both men had criticized the deal Fetterman was in favor of. Hostin also pointed out Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) had attacked the deal.
“As you mentioned, Democrats had big wins last week, so you had momentum. Why give in now? Why bring a butter knife to a gun fight?” Hostin asked Fetterman.
She continued: “Are you willing to gamble that the GOP will negotiate on healthcare in good faith once the government reopens? Because if that gamble is wrong, half a million Pennsylvanians that you represent, their healthcare costs will skyrocket if you are wrong! And I believe you are wrong.”
Her remarks drew a cheer from The View audience.
Fetterman — who was one of seven Democratic senators who voted to reopen the government — told her he was not buying the criticism.
“Well, first of all, MTG is quite literally the last person in America that I’m going to take advice [from] or to get their kinds of leadership and values from,” Fetterman said.
Fetterman then said he does not “need a lecture from Bernie or the governor in California, because they are representing very deep blue kinds of populations.”
The senator added he voted to reopen the government because he is upset millions of Americans are not receiving their SNAP benefits and because government employees are not receiving their paychecks.
“I promise you, this isn’t a political game. It is viewed [that way] by many of us, but the reality is, 42 million Americans now [are] not sure where their next meal is going to come from because we vote like that. Or people that haven’t been paid for five weeks now and that kinds of chaos. Those kinds of workers have to borrow more than half a billion dollars from their credit union just to pay the bills,” said Fetterman.
Fetterman also told Fox & Friends on Tuesday morning that “no one really knows” who is leading the Democratic party.
