The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has commended the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association for initiating a full scholarship scheme aimed at supporting the children of fallen heroes.

In a statement on X signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, on Tuesday, Egbetokun gave the commendation in Abuja when the association’s executives, led by its president, Mrs. Oghogho Musa, paid him a courtesy visit at the Force Headquarters.

It can be recalled that Hundeyin resumed office on September 5 as the Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian police force.

Musa explained that the scholarship programme would begin with the commissioning of the DEPOWA Future Leaders Academy in September 2026. According to her, the initiative would not only cater to the educational needs of children who lost their parents in active service but also promote unity by including children from surrounding communities.

“This is our way of saying thank you to the troops and their families for the sacrifices they continue to make for Nigeria’s peace and security,” Musa said.

She also expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Police Force for its role in fighting violent crimes and its active participation in international peacekeeping missions, describing police officers as “unsung heroes who deserve more recognition and support.”

In his response, IGP Egbetokun assured that the police would remain steadfast in their duty to protect lives and property while ensuring public safety and democratic stability.

“The Nigeria Police Force will continue to uphold its constitutional responsibilities, and gestures like this give us more strength to keep going,” he stated.

The IGP described DEPOWA’s gesture as a landmark initiative that would provide hope for families of fallen officers and create pathways for young Nigerians to thrive despite losing their parents in the line of duty.
