KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An Independence man is now charged with felony driving while intoxicated (DWI) after a deadly crash.

Jackson County prosecutors on Tuesday charged Jonathan Stone with one count of DWI, death of another, in connection with a crash on June 4 involving a pedestrian.

According to court documents, officers with the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) responded to the crash around 5:30 p.m. at E. 39th Street and Blue Ridge Cutoff.

Investigators said the driver of a silver Mercury was speeding northbound on Blue Ridge while changing lanes repeatedly and passing other cars. The driver, identified as Stone, lost control of the car; he hit a tree and a person who was waiting for a bus before the car overturned.

The person who was hit was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police learned the victim died on July 7.

Court documents say several people witnessed the crash, including one person who reported having dash camera video of the crash. The video was later recovered, and witness statements were consistent that Stone was driving the car erratically and speeding past other cars on the roadway.

An officer noticed Stone had slurred speech, and the officer smelled a moderate odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath. The officer administered the three standardized field sobriety tests, in which Stone showed several signs of impairment.

Stone agreed to a preliminary breath test in which his BAC was .116, according to court documents.

According to court documents, after the crash, Stone did admit to police that he had consumed alcohol.

Court documents say when Stone was asked what he was doing the last three hours before the crash, he responded, “working on my truck and drinking alcohol too much.”
